Make It Monday | Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning is in full swing in the Masanotti household. Since putting our home on the MARKET in October, our house has been the cleanest it’s ever been…you never know when you’ll get a call for a showing and it’s really hard to drop everything at work to go home and clean. {side note: Someone PLEASE buy our home…it’s the best home in Rock Hill, S.C.}

Having to clean everyday means going through cleaners like nobody’s business…and that can get quite expensive. Also, have you ever read the back of those cleaners…the numbers of chemicals is kind of scary…so for today’s Make it Monday, I am going to feature natural home cleaners that are gentler for you and your loved ones:

Baking Soda
Such a versatile, non-toxic, non-poisonous cleaner, baking soda not only cleans and deodorizes, it does SO much more! Baking Soda removes can be used to clean countertops, remove stains from food containers, clean silver, remove scuffs or grease from any surface, clear out clogged drains, remove “doggie” odors, remove burnt food from your oven or grill and more. Seriously, this is always good to have around to use in the kitchen, the bathroom, etc. etc.

Distilled White Vinegar
Between this and baking soda, you can pretty much clean your ENITRE house! Known to many as the miracle cleaner, Vinegar is a weak form of acetic acid that forms through the fermentation of sugars or starches. Pour it in a spray bottle too to use on countertops and more. Vinegar can be used to remove stickers, stains and more…to clean windows (wipe with a newspaper! not kidding, it’s amazing!), to clean metals, to remove clogs and buildup on shower drains and heads, to clean shower curtains and walls. Seriously, you can pretty much use this for everything.

Lavendar, Lemon or Tea Tree Oil
These essential oils and more can be added to water in a spray bottle and used on most surfaces as an all-purpose cleaner…not to mention leaving your house smelling yummy. I have a friend that uses a dab or two of tea tree oil instead of deodorant everyday! You can add a drop or two of these oils in laundry, in your dishwasher, in your bath…practically anywhere.

If you’re thinking..”Sounds great, but I DO not have time to make my own…” My next suggestion is my new favorite “purchased” cleaner…Mrs. Meyers!

Seriously…this stuff smells AMAZING and works like a charm! Mrs. Meyers knows her stuff and this all-purpose cleaner should last a LONG time. For more thoughts and uses on homemade household cleaners, check out a couple of these websites:

Make It Monday | Yah, I wish…

Happy Easter Monday! I had no clue this day even existed before I started working for an Episcopal school. But I love it because it’s a day off from work. I got to sleep in a little, enjoy a nice breakfast and coffee with Jay and now I’m snuggling with my two beagles trying to plan out my day. A little of this…a little of that…a LOT of relaxing outside is on the to-do list for today.

Today’s “Make it Monday” is a little different than usual. It’s more of a “I wish I could’ve made that – Monday.” A few weeks ago, this amazing-ness came across my Twitter-feed:

I know what you’re probably thinking…”Jess that’s great…it looks like a pretty wedding invitation…big deal?!” Well…it’s not JUST any wedding invitation…it is the most creative wedding invitation I have EVER seen to-date. This beautiful creation is from Kelli Anderson, a NYC based designer and artist and in my book, holds the “record” for most creative designer so far. Pun most certainly intended…see below:

keep going…and get excited…

oh yes, the goodness is about to appear…

prepare to have your face literally…rocked off:

THIS is the stuff I want to come up with one day…this level of creativity is something I want to attain in the future…until then…Happy Monday

Make It Monday | Backyard Movie Night

Spring is in the air! So thankful for the rain this past week…more like my sinuses are thankful for the rain. I think it drowned most of the pollen and I can actually breathe again. We managed to escape the terrible storms & tornadoes on Saturday and Sunday was absolutely BEAUTIFUL…sunny, high 70’s and it didn’t get dark until 8pm. We broke in the grill and cooked out with my sister, her boyfriend and his friends for our first official cookout of the season! We played cornhole until it got too dark to see. It was glorious! It also got me thinking about today’s Make it Monday…nights like those would be PERFECT for a make-shift backyard theater.

Here’s what you need to Make Your Own Backyard Theater:

1. Space – You need an area to set up seating, the “screen”, the projecter, etc. Backyards are PERFECT

2. A Screen – If you have an actual portable screen that would be great OR if you’re like me and do not…you can hang a bedsheet (white). Be sure to put the edges of the sheet tight so there are minimal ripples or creases…thus creating a clear “picture”.

3. Seating – Think picnic blankets, lawn chairs, tents, etc…

4. Food – Chips, Salsa, Popcorn, Dips, Pizza…finger foods are the BEST…something to munch on:) Here’s one of my favorite munchie recipes: Buffalo Chicken Dip

5. Beverages – Water, Lemonade, Coffee, Tea…whatever floats your boat

6. A Projector & Speakers – So many advanced methods now…but I’m envisioning a laptop hooked to a projector with external speakers attached for a better sound.

7. Movie – For me, I would pick a comedy or action movie to watch outdoors…I’m a wimp, so you probably won’t convince me to show a horror movie outside…where I’m fully exposed to zombies and boogey men…but if that’s your cup of tea, I could see horror movies being fun outside.

This is perfection to me – Here’s so lovely spring nights in the backyard with movies, food and friends! Happy Spring:)
